In this course students generally undertake their formal and supervised research training over a period of three and half years full-time up to five years full-time or four years part-time up to eight years part-time. Research can be undertaken at Swinburne, or an approved external organisation. A major thesis is the sole form of assessment for this award. Candidates carry out a program of research, investigation or development involving the submission of a substantial major thesis embodying the results of that program and presented as a coherent whole work.

Applicants should have a 1st class or upper 2nd class honours degree or equivalent in a discipline appropriate to the proposed area of study. The level of academic achievement in prior studies should be of a very high standard. Other relevant activities, including work experience, will be taken into account in assessing applications.

Students must determine their research area of interest first and locate a supervisor for their research higher degree. Then they should send in the completed research higher degree candidature form with certified copies of all transcripts of results and proof of academic qualifications to Admissions (H6), Swinburne University of Technology, PO Box 218, Hawthorn Vic 3122 Australia or submit the application to Student Information Centre (on any campus).
